My daughter and I arrived on 12/15 at 4:00. Let me start by saying that I am a fan of Holiday Inn, and it has been a trusted brand for me. This hotel stay, however, was not good. The hotel was hosting two large events, and they only had one desk clerk. I was told his name is Chris, and he was really nice, proficient at his job, and maintained a positive attitude, which is why I gave service 4 stars. When we arrived, there was a family in the lobby with kids running around, the phone was ringing, and it was crazy, which is what my daughter and I were trying to get away from for the weekend. After we finally checked in, we got to room 332 and it smelled like someone had spilled a bottle of men's cologne. Because the front desk clerk was so busy, and we had to go back out, we opened the window with the expectation it would air out the room. When we returned to the room 2 hours later, the smell was still horrendous. I have allergies, and it was giving me a headache, so I called down to Chris at the front desk and he had another room available. My daughter and I then had to carry all of our stuff down to the lobby to get the new room number and keys. We were then put in room 345, and it was smaller than the first room, but sufficient. While we were settling in, the people in the room above us were stomping and running, and it was so LOUD. At this point, it's already after 9:00 and we had already switched rooms once, so we didn't want to go through the inconvenience of having to change rooms a third time, so we felt like we had to just deal with it. Needless to say, neither one of us got any really good sleep because the stomping and noise were constant. This hotel is definitely not soundproof. We were there for my daughter's birthday weekend, and we were hugely disappointed with this stay.
Stayed here over Thanksgiving break with my family. No complaints. Very clean and updated. No bad smells. No bed bugs. Pool is slightly heated. Nice gym that was empty and unused. On-site restaurant with full bar. Had a really nice stay and met some nice people. Would stay again.
Sleeping inconveniences. I was staying with my son all week, but decided to stay here for the night with my mom, as the Groome airport shuttle is scheduled for pick up at 5:40 a.m. here at the hotel. I was hoping to get a little more sleep by staying here.
The room is HUGE and clean! The staff is very friendly. When I called about the TV not turning on, someone was sent up immediately. The maintenance man got the TV to turn on. However, after he left, I couldn’t find a channel that worked.
There are no curtains, so the outside lights shine through the window, which was a bit annoying. It is the holiday season so there are extra bright lights. It is difficult for me to sleep with such bright lights. I also like to wind down by watching TV, so falling asleep is a bit challenging for me right now, and I have to wake up very early.
We are on the second floor. If possible, try to get a room on the third floor. You can hear people walking and murmurs of conversation.
Sleepless in Salem.
Update: it is now midnight and the simple walking back and fourth from the upstairs guest above our room is keeping me up. The ceiling is making cracking and squeezing noises as well as pounding sounds when they walk. I can now also hear their TV which makes me annoyed and a bit jealous since mine does not work.
This hotel is pretty top notch. The staff is super friendly, the pool is kept warm and clean (but closes a bit early in my opinion), the rooms are very clean and comfortable. Judy was our front desk customer service rep and she was …
NO complimentary breakfast
NO complimentary pot brewed coffee just what you get in the room with the cheap bare minimum set up
HAIR that wasn't mine in shower.
And just a suggestion for maintenance person not a complaint, opt to use professional language when fixing issue in guest rooms, profanity to describe issues is just bad etiquette.
Won't be staying here again, I've stayed in lower quality motels that made a better effort with breakfast and at the very least coffee.
Communication prior to visit upon making reservations about holding deposits would be best. I was charged in excess of what I prepaid for my room on my card and as of 2 days later still have not been refunded. This caused me a great inconvenience as I had carefully budgeted for this trip as I am retired on a fixed income.
April at the front desk was very kind and went out of her way to ensure we had a room large enough for my family. It was a great first impression. Room was very nice and spacious. Beds were very comfortable. Enjoyed our stay!
Locations is just off of I-5 and not far from really anywhere in Salem if you have a car with you. The property is well-kept and rather upscale, but you won't get a complimentary breakfast or lobby coffee that most other Holiday Inns offer. For food, you'll have to pay at the in-house restaurant/bar. We had a King room that was fairly large and included a loveseat, lift-top coffee table, desk, and accent chair with ottoman/leg rest. The bedside tables had fast-charge outlets and USB-A ports. The fridge was a disappointing very small size for such a large room. It wasn't even as big as a counter-height fridge. Room and bathroom was clean, and mattress was quite comfortable (medium, not too firm). This location uses the tiny bottles of Dove shampoo/conditioner/body lotion/tiny Dove soap bar rather than the larger pump styles at many other Holiday Inn locations, so be sure to ask for extra if you aren't bringing your own. Big bonus, if you're needing to get to or from PDX, is that a shuttle picks up there and takes you the hour trip to the airport. It probably picks up at other hotels along the way, so plan accordingly.
